Altadena | $2.999 Million

A Spanish-style house built in 1926, with five bedrooms, three full bathrooms and two half bathrooms, on a 0.5-acre lot

This house is in a mostly residential section of Altadena, about a five-minute drive from the shopping along Lake Avenue. A number of trailheads are within a short drive or walk, including Henninger Trailhead, which has paths of varying difficulty for hikers and mountain bikers.

Altadena Town & Country Club, a members-only club with tennis and swimming facilities, and Altadena Golf Course, a public course with a driving range, are about five minutes away by car. Driving to downtown Los Angeles takes about half an hour, as does heading east into the heart of the San Gabriel Valley.

Size: 3,831 square feet

Price per square foot: $783

Indoors: From the sidewalk, a brick path runs through a manicured yard, up to the arched front door, which opens into a foyer with hardwood floors, a staircase with a wrought-iron railing and access to a powder room opposite the staircase.

To the right is a living room with a fireplace, dark wood ceiling beams, a large, arched window overlooking the front yard and another one, with French doors, facing a patio in back.

To the left of the foyer is a dining room with French doors that offer outdoor access. It is open to a renovated kitchen with marble counters and stainless steel appliances, including an eight-burner range and a wine refrigerator.

Behind the kitchen is a bedroom with an en suite bathroom. Three more bedrooms are upstairs, including the primary suite, which is big enough to hold a king-size bed and a sofa. The bedroom has a fireplace and a private balcony; the bathroom has a claw-foot tub with matte-black feet and a glass-walled shower.

Across the hall are two large guest rooms, one of which has a private terrace with views of the San Gabriel Mountains. They share a bathroom off the hallway with a combination tub and shower.

The lowest level of the house, reached by stairs in the kitchen, has another guest room and a family room, both of which have Saltillo-tile floors. A second powder room and a laundry room are also on this level.

Outdoor space: A covered patio behind the house offers views of the property. Steps lead down to the main terrace, which is partially covered by a pergola and has an outdoor kitchen. Stairs continue down to the backyard beyond. The attached garage holds two cars.

Taxes: $38,088 (estimated)

Tiburon | $2.997 Million

A converted 1908 barn with two bedrooms, one and a half bathrooms and a one-bedroom, one-bathroom apartment, on a 0.3-acre lot

In the late 19th century, travelers to and from San Francisco and points north often passed through Tiburon, where ferry service to the city met train service heading as far north as Mendocino. This barn-style structure was built to house railroad records; later, it served as the office of Charles Warren Callister, a prolific postwar architect.

The property is a few blocks from upscale restaurants on the waterfront and within walking distance of ferry terminals offering transportation to Angel Island and San Francisco. Driving to San Francisco usually takes less than an hour, depending on traffic.

Size: 3,700 square feet

Price per square foot: $810

Indoors: This property has two units. An outdoor staircase leads first to the front door of the primary unit, which opens into a mudroom with access to a powder room. Beyond is an expansive great room with redwood walls, poured-concrete floors and high ceilings; this building recently got a new roof and new skylights that brighten the space.

At one end of the room is a sitting area with a door to a terrace outside. At the other end is a dining area with a spiral staircase that leads to the second floor, which contains an office with a large window facing downtown Tiburon, a kitchen with parquet floors and a laundry room.

Two bedrooms are off a hallway that runs between the kitchen and the office; they share a full bathroom with a combination tub and shower.

The second unit, slightly elevated from the main building, is configured as a one-bedroom apartment, with a galley kitchen, a sunny living room, a bedroom and a full bathroom.

Outdoor space: The expansive terrace off the sitting area in the primary unit offers views of San Francisco Bay; it is big enough for a table, chairs and a barbecue. A second deck is just off the entryway. The driveway shared by the units has parking for two cars.

Geyserville | $2.95 Million

A four-bedroom house built in 1992, with three full bathrooms and two half bathrooms, on a 61-acre lot

Just 40 minutes from Santa Rosa, Geyserville is a regular stop on wine tours. This property includes three acres devoted to growing Syrah grapes, which flourish in this climate, and the homeowners are eligible for membership in the Vineyard Club, a wedding and events venue about 20 minutes away.

The tasting rooms and bed-and-breakfasts of downtown Geyserville are about 15 minutes away, as is River Rock Casino. Sonoma and Napa are about an hour and 20 minutes away; San Francisco and Sacramento are about a two-and-a-half-hour drive.

Size: 4,352 square feet

Price per square foot: $678

Indoors: A long driveway leads from the street to the house, which is set on an incline, overlooking the property.

The glass front door opens into a sunny corridor that leads to a living room with hardwood floors, a fireplace flanked by bookshelves and floor-to-ceiling windows facing the pool and the vineyards.

The hardwood floors continue into an open kitchen and dining area, with space for a table in front of a large window and sliding-glass doors that open to a covered patio.

The primary suite is on this level, off the main hallway, with a fireplace, a private deck and a bathroom that has a double vanity with plenty of cabinet space. A powder room is also off the main hallway.

From the dining area, stairs lead down to the family room on the lower level, which has a stone fireplace and more built-in bookshelves and floor-to-ceiling windows. There are three guest rooms on this level, one en suite; the other two share a shower, but have their own sinks and toilets.

Outdoor space: From the house, a landscaped path leads to the pool, where swimmers have views of vineyards. The area surrounding the pool is paved, with a wood pergola offering shade on hot days. The property’s vineyard gets direct sunlight, with a few mature trees nearby shading a flat area that could hold a table and chairs.
